Mission: I believe that humans can find better ways to coexist with the ocean, and have devoted my career to making this possible. My scientific research, following the motion of pollutants and microscopic organisms through the marine environment, has directly affected a number of coastal management decisions. My teaching and educational research promote and measure students' ability to make informed decisions about the ocean. Objectives in Education: In the next few years, I would like to find a career in science education that is respected (and paid) at a similar level to scientific research. Toward this end, I am augmenting my scientific background in several ways. First, I have formed a small company to bring marine education to schools, Ocean and You . I am constantly developing new curricula, and evaluating their effect on children. Second, I am taking online graduate courses in marine and environmental education, to improve my understanding of pedagogical theory. I supplement the coursework by attending as many conferences as I can on marine, science and environmental education. Finally, I am still working to publish my own educational research. |
